Marko Arnautovic scored one goal and set up another but in the end left the pitch empty-handed as Werder's striker and his Austrian national team lost their Euro 2012 qualifier against Germany 6-2 in Gelsenkirchen. Tim Wiese and Per Mertesacker did not play for the Germans, who booked their spot at Euro 2012 with the victory.

In Germany's group, Turkey and Mehmet Ekici remained alive for a ticket to Poland and Ukraine next summer as Guus Hiddink's team beat Kazakhstan 2-1 on Arda Turan's goal in the seventh minute of stoppage time. Turkey improved to second place in the group. Ekici was substituted out in the 51st minute with Turkey leading 1-0.

Werder defender Sokratis and the Greek national team remained atop Group F as the 2004 European champions beat Israel 1-0. After five wins in seven games, the Greeks already have collected 17 points. Sokratis did not play in the contest.
