Twelve months have flown by - filled with highs and lows, celebrations and disappointments, departures and returns. 2011 - a year with wonderful moments but also some difficult times between relegation angst and dreams of fall championships. It's not easy to retain an overview of it all. That's why WERDER.DE once again is offering its Green-Whites almanac at year's end. Werder 2011 from A to Z, to remember and smile. Today: Part 6 - P to R:
The two pre-season events could not be any more different. In the one, you needed strong nerves while ability to communicate with horses was necessary in the other. The one was a pure adrenaline rush while the other worked your risible muscles. The Werder players travelled with 580 P.S. in the first and with a half P.S. with the other. The one event was a VW driving event and the other was a Werder racing day.
The latter saw a racing club organise a pony sulky race for the Werder Bremen players at the Bremen Vahr racetrack. Marko Marin, Lukas Schmitz, Tim Wiese, Markus Rosenberg, Clemens Fritz and Philipp Bargfrede took part in the pony race with Wiese winning.
Three days later, the entire Werder delegation took to a racing track in Nohra near Erfurt with automobiles from club sponsor Volkswagen. "You are a little scared when you are in the car. I thought I was going to run into the wall a couple times but the drivers had everything under control," said Sandro Wagner.
Werder fans have a new place to meet up and talk about all the latest news and rumours of the club. The Fan Café in the East Curve Hall, which has been open since 1 April, is a collaboration between the SV Werder fan and member support team and the Fan Projekt Bremen e.V. group. It is not required to be part of a group or fan club to take advantage of the offer. Anyone whose heart beats Green-White is warmly welcome Mondays after 5 p.m.
And the Fan Café is not only a meeting point for sports fans. There are also various offers such as music, film, readings and discussions. For example, Werder honorary captains Marco Bode and Frank Baumann stopped by for a reading by author Dieter Schneider to talk about the memorable double winning season 2003-04.
As the saying goes, a fine wine needs time to ripen. Only then does it have its best quality. Apparently the same goes for Claudio Pizarro, who just gets better the older he gets. "Piza" is a three-time German champion, four-time German DFB Cup winner, world club cup champ, 61-times capped Peruvian international and father of three. While he could just turn it down and rest on his laurels, Pizarro just wants to get even better.
And that seems to be the case during the 2011-12 season as he has scored 12 goals in 15 matches. "I am not as good as a player as earlier but now I score more goals," said Pizarro.
