Twelve months have flown by - filled with highs and lows, celebrations and disappointments, departures and returns. 2011 - a year with wonderful moments but also some difficult times between relegation angst and dreams of fall championships. It's not easy to retain an overview of it all. That's why WERDER.DE once again is offering its Green-Whites almanac at year's end. Werder 2011 from A to Z, to remember and smile. Today: Part 7 - S to U:
Summer could be the nicest time of the year - warmth, sun and holidays. If there wasn't the one small problem that summer is more or less football-less save for national team tournaments! Werder Bremen came up with something this year so that the fans didn't have to just sit and wait.
Right on time for the presentation of the new game dress, the biggest jersey swap in club history started. The Werder jersey was "on tour" from 29 June until the first Bundesliga home match on 6 August. The new outfit travelled more than 2,000 kilometres before it returned to Bremen and was received by honorary captain Frank Baumann. The new jersey was swapped 2,203 times at a number of famous locations such as Brandenburg Gate, the Alster in Hamburg and the Cologne cathedral.
Bremen players visiting the Freimarkt festival has a long tradition and just as in previous years, SV Werder Bremen presented their new players in the Bavaria tent in October. And just like in past years, "Iggy", Sokratis, Mehmet Ekici & Co. had the opportunity to sing their way into the fans' hearts with a convincing version of "Lebenslang Grün-Weiß" ("Lifelong Green-White"). The players missed the event in 2010 which made this year's edition all the more exciting for the fans. But the fans and players had fun with one another and Clemens Fritz crowned Naldo as the "best singer in the team". After six years of belonging to the club, Naldo can really sing.
Test matches offer football coaches the opportunity to try out new systems, practice tactical variations and give players who don't play much some playing time. Test matches are also there for clubs to win new fans, which was the case in Werder's 3-0 victory over Osnabrück on 6 October. During the game, the number of Werder Facebook fans grew by 1,000 within 50 minutes to go over the 300,000 barrier, something only Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Schalke had accomplished. The new mark happened just before the one-year anniversary of the start of the club's own Facebook page on 22 October. There will be plenty of reasons to "Like" the Werder Facebook page in 2012.
