Werder chairman of the management board Klaus Allofs is leaving SV Werder Bremen GmbH & Co KG aA and heading to VfL Wolfsburg. Both clubs agreed to the move overnight Tuesday to Wednesday. Allofs' contract with SV Werder until 2016 will be prematurely terminated, as confirmed by Werder supervisory board chairman Willi Lemke.

"Klaus Allofs shaped the development of Werder Bremen decisively for more than the last decade and celebrated some great sporting success. From that standpoint, it was obvious that we comply with Klaus Allofs' request and negotiate a move to VfL Wolfsburg. We would like to expressly thank him for his excellent work," said Lemke Wednesday morning. Neither club announced details about the negotiations.

Allofs, who has guided Werder's sporting body since 1999, is expected to be introduced in Wolfsburg on Thursday. He thanked Werder for accommodating his request and looked back on a great time along the Weser. "With this step to Wolfsburg, 13 important years come to an end for me. There were offers from other clubs here and there during that time, but they never played a role for me. But now, the time has come in which I would like to look for a new challenge," said Allofs. The former Werder striker leaves the club with a good feeling. "I think Werder Bremen are very well set after the sporting shake-up. I am certain that the club has a good future," said Allofs.

Werder Bremen's search for a successor for Allofs has already started. "We have generated a job profile for a successor. But we do not want to talk about names at this point in time. We are certain that we will be able to present a good solution for Werder," said Lemke.

Allofs has been responsible for Werder's Bundesliga team since 1999, initially as chairman of professional football and then as manager in the same function following the move to a limited liability company. Allofs and head coach Thomas Schaaf guided the team to the league and cup double in 2004 as well as six appearances in the Champions League and one showing in the Europa League. Allofs was at the helm when the club won the German DFB Cup in 2009, when they also reached the UEFA Cup final. Since 2009, Allofs also acted as chairman of the management board.
