Head coach Thomas Schaaf and athletics trainer Reinhard Schnittker had to support Joseph Akpala on his way to the changing room, where the 26-year-old was examined after a collision with keeper Raphael Wolf in training Sunday morning. The initial diagnosis is medial collateral ligament damage to his left knee.

"There was contact when he attempted a shot and the knee got turned. We have to assume that Joseph will not be immediately available," said Schaaf. The team will decide on Monday on the next step with the striker.

The coaching staff will definitely not have the services of Kevin De Bruyne on Sunday and Monday as the Belgian will miss training for private reasons. There was good news about captain Clemens Fritz as he recovered from the flu and trained again with his teammates after missing a week of practice.
