The Nigerian national team and Werder striker Joseph Akpala have been eliminated in the first round of the Confed Cup 2013. After opening the tournament with a 6-1 win over Tahiti (17 June 2013), where the Green-Whites striker did not play, Nigeria lost the decisive two matches against Uruguay (21 June 2013) and Spain (23 June 2013).

While Akpala was subbed in after 74 minutes in the 2-1 defeat against the South Americans, he played from the start against the world and European champions Spain. But the Werder striker could also not hinder a 3-0 loss.

Nigeria ended the first round in third place behind Spain and Uruguay, getting eliminated from the tournament in Brazil.
