Preparations for the new season started punctually at 10 a.m. Friday morning 28 June 2013 for Werder Bremen. A lactate test followed later in the day for Fritz, Miele & co. Despite some Nordic weather, the atmosphere was relaxed, in good spirits and full of expectations.

In addition to the first performance diagnostics and the later afternoon training, the some 150 on-lookers wanted to catch a glimpse of new head coach Robin Dutt. "The first impression of Dutt was definitely positive and his introduction to us was very euphoric. He simply did a good job. We all wish him only the best and stand fully behind him," said goalkeeper Sebastian Mielitz.

"The positive energy must be there from the start"

After a bit a small talk with the players, Dutt was looking forward to finally seeing the guys playing football at the afternoon training. The 48-year-old coach had to make do without a few players. While Marko Arnautovic, Zlatko Junuzovic and Sebastian Prödl as well as new players Cedrick Makiadi and Luca Caldirola will arrive at the training camp in Zillertal, returnee Denni Avdic will still miss a couple weeks with an injury.

Wurtz signs professional contract

Torsten Frings was on hand to start his coaching traineeship program with the U23s while the previously suspended Eljero Elia was back in the Green-Whites squad. "Eljero and Marko are excellent players and strong offensive forces. I would like it if we could integrate them. I shouldn't be the problem," said Dutt confidently.

The first day after the summer holiday was also special for Johannes Wurtz as the 21-year-old signed his first professional contract with Werder, staying with Bremen until 2016.
