A loss is always bitter, but a loss in the derby is doubly dissatisfying. That was felt by coach Viktor Skripnik, captain Zlatko Junuzovic and Werder fans alike. "We wanted to get it right in the derby, but we weren't able to put up a fight from the beginning," said Thomas Eichin. "We didn't put in a strong performance. The disappointment is unbelievable," said Felix Wiedwald after the 3-1 loss.
werder.de got the reaction of players and staff after the final whistle.
On the match:
Zlatko Junuzovic: "We absolutely didn't want to lose, but then suddenly we were 2-0 down. That hurt us. When we scored, we had hope again, but after a silly counter attack that was gone. We let Hamburg get too many counters from long balls before the goal."

Philipp Bargfrede: "The loss is very disappointing. We wanted to do a lot more to try and get the win but it was difficult for us after going 1-0 down. We put on a lot more pressure in the second half and played well up front. The counter that put us 3-1 down was a sore one to take."
Fin Bartels: "Going down so early on shook us, and after the result against Wolfsburg we did too little today. Usually we can beat HSV, but with that performance we weren't able to. We didn't reach our full potential today."
Felix Wiedwald: "The early goal surprised us and knocked our confidence. In the second half we got right back into the game but possibly wanted too much and we let our guard down. That's very annoying. Hamburg were more clinical than us, better in the 50-50s and got out of defence a lot quicker than us.
Florian Grillitsch: "We didn't win any 50-50 challenges or second balls and weren't good defensively. The goal we scored gave us hope, but that was crushed with a silly counter attack. It's bitter to suffer a loss after such a good week in training."
Viktor Skripnik: "In a derby you need to be a lot more confident. We were too cautious in the first half and didn't react until the second. Too many times this season we have been caught sleeping or conceded unlucky goals."

Thomas Eichin: "The early goal totally unsettled us and we couldn't close down the spaces properly. All in all, it was a very poor game from us. HSV were clearly better, much more confident and much stronger in the fifty-fifties. After the break we were much better, played with courage, put pressure on and scored a goal to get us back in the game. The equaliser was there for the taking, but we were too open at the back and they killed the game on the break. We needn't bother thinking up excuses today though, we were well and truly beaten."
State of mind after the derby defeat:
Viktor Skripnik: "The team is frustrated and angry. I'm not a robot, I feel exactly the same. Every defeat is bitter, but to lose in a derby is twice as painful. It's hard work as a coach to stand on the sidelines and watch the goals go in."
Fin Bartels: "It's not nice losing at home in the derby. We wanted to give everything today. The defeat is tough for everyone to take, especially the fans.
Thoughts on the current situation:
Philipp Bargfrede: "We're not having the best of times at the moment and don't need to talk about anything other than a relegation battle. We're down at the bottom, but we have to keep looking up. We have another important game next week. Stuttgart are struggling too, so we have to get points there."

Felix Wiedwald: "We can't be losing five home games in a row. We need to find our sting and our bite again as a team and get to where we were last year. We need to start picking up points at home. If we can't do that, it will be difficult to get away from the bottom. We desperately need points."
Zlatko Junuzovic: "We've disappointed a lot of people today, we're well aware of that. We need to take a long, hard look at ourselves; only we can change the situation. There's no point in going on about it, we just need to get ourselves out of it as a team. Everyone has to do their bit and has to be ready to give everything."
Fin Bartels: "We now have to sit down and analyse everything. We've played much better football than that. I can't explain why we haven't seen it in the last two games."
Viktor Skripnik: "We find ourselves where Werder have been for years: in a relegation battle. We have to keep working objectively, go over our performance honestly and prepare ourselves for the next games in a professional manner."
Florian Grillitsch: "We need to bring our strengths back to the table: running, fighting and winning. We will gain confidence on the training pitch and will go into the Stuttgart game fully prepared."
Remaining fixtures until Christmas:
Thomas Eichin: "We still have three games from which we absolutely have to take some points. We have some catching up to do, otherwise things get dangerous. We will be having some discussions in the next few days and will try to make it easier for the coaching staff and team to work in peace."
Viktor Skripnik: "Last season we had 17 points by the winter break and we can still get more than that. Our next games are against direct rivals. We can get points from these games."
