It won't be an evening forgotten any time soon for Jannik Vestergaard. The Werder defender came on as a substitute in the 84th minute of the European Championship play-off between Denmark and Sweden to make his competitive debut for the national team.
It was a perfect start to his international career, scoring just seven minutes into his debut to make it 2-2 in injury time. But it wasn't enough, as the draw meant Sweden progressed to the European Championship, following their 2-1 win in the first leg. Vestergaard, at least, will be consoled be the fact that he fulfilled a childhood dream in his home city Copenhagen. "Whenever Denmark played when I was a little child, my mum always painted my face with the national colours. I was a big fan of the national team as a kid. Today I am immensely proud to play for them," said Vestergaard.
It was a far less enjoyable night for Claudio Pizarro and the Peru national team in their World Cup qualifiers, as they lost 3-0 against five-time winners Brazil. The Werder striker didn't feature in the match.
