The U17's World Cup in Chile has been under way since Sunday. Two of our Green-White youngsters - midfielder Niklas Schmidt and striker Johannes Eggestein - are taking part in the tournament in South America with Germany's U17s. While Schmidt is still waiting for his first appearance with the first group game played, goal-getter Eggestein started the tournament with a brace against Australia.

WERDER.DE got in touch with the young striker in the team hotel in Chillán, and spoke to the 17-year-old about the opening game, the local conditions and the targets for the World Cup.

WERDER.DE: The Germany U17s started their World Cup campaign with a convincing victory, with you scoring two goals of your own. It could hardly have gone any better for you, could it?

Johannes Eggestein: That's right. It really did go extremely well. I'm happy to have started well. We played really well in the first half. In terms of my goals, I was obviously lucky enough to have been assisted fantastically by Salih Özcan.

WERDER.DE: Be honest, how many text messages did you have congratulating you after the game? Were there any special ones?

Johannes Eggestein: I did have quite a few messages, but not really any special ones.

Johannes Eggestein with his Germany U17 teammates at the World Cup

WERDER.DE: The World Cup is being played in Chile. Can you give us a bit of an insight into the weather conditions over there?

Johannes Eggestein: The hotel and the conditions are okay. We have a lot of assistance here, as well as a chef. The town of Chillán is not particularly big, but aside from the training facilities and pitches we haven't actually seen a great deal here.

WERDER.DE: Your brother Maximilian also plays for Werder. Do you ever get any advice from your older brother?

Johannes Eggestein: Not so much in terms of the national side, since he's not played for DFB teams that often. But when it comes to Werder I listen intently to everything he has to say; how we train and how everything works within the team.

WERDER.DE: Your Green-Whites' colleague Niklas Schmidt is also with you at the World Cup. Does this mean you have naturally been in closer contact with him than anyone else, or are there any teammates you like to spend time with particularly.

Johannes Eggestein: I'm an outgoing person and everyone at the team gets along really well. It's still nice to have a Bremen player here though. I just know Niklas a lot better.

WERDER.DE: The win against Australia has put you top of the group. What is your target for the World Cup?

Johannes Eggestein: We want to get as far as possible, that means the aim is to win the title.

Thanks very much for talking to us and good luck to the both of you!
