When SV Werder welcome Bayern München to the Weser-Stadion on Saturday, the 17th October (Kick-off 15:30 CEST), Philipp Bargfrede will have gone almost exactly a month without playing a competitive game due to a suspension. In the 90th minute of the Bundesliga clash with FC Ingolstadt on 19th September, the defensive midfielder was sent off by referee Bastian Dankert. The 26-year-old will be eligible to play again for when the German record champions come to town.

Bargfrede finds it difficult to come up with an explanation for his foul on Ingolstadt's Alfrede Morales. "I just saw red, I can't be letting that happen really," admits Bargfrede, and adds: "Even before the referee pulled out the red card I thought to myself: Philipp, you idiot." The sending off was a new experience for the midfield playmaker. He had never had a complete loss of control like this one before in his career. "Frustration with my performance definitely played a big part," said Bargi.

Despite being suspended, Bargfrede has remained in close contact with the rest of the team and even went to the Green-Whites' last game away at Hannover. "I find it difficult to just be a spectator during these games. I'm often a lot more on edge than when I'm on the pitch myself. Having to sit out of the last three games and watch on from the side was anything but easy," said Bargi talking to WERDER.TV.

In the weeks of his suspension, his teammates were not able to pick up any points without his help. But to put all the blame for the losing streak on his absence is far too easy in the defensive midfielder's opinion. "I do think I give the team a bit of stability. But even without me there are eleven good players on the pitch. The lads actually played very well against Hannover, they just couldn't make the most of their chances."

The Green-Whites' midfield machine is now fully focused on the future: "The suspension has been carried out now; it's been ticked off the list. I'm happy to be involved again," said the 26-year-old. Bargfrede knows, just as the rest of the team does that the current situation is not easy. But "we've only got ourselves to blame for that in the last few games. The team has the desire to turn this form around and start a good run of games."

In the coming games, SV Werder "will have to show determination and passion to try and fight back. We will then be able to build on this and our football will improve as a result. Especially against Bayern, we want to give everything and leave the pitch knowing that we have done so," said Bargfrede looking to the challenge ahead.
