Unlucky, needless and annoying - just some of the words used by Werder players about the 2-1 loss to Darmstadt. "Having to come home with nothing hurts," said Jannik Vestergaard in the catacombs of the Merck-Stadion am Böllenfalltor. He shared the frustration of many about the conceded penalty, late winner and yet another red card.

On the game:

Viktor Skripnik: "Darmstadt had more passion and wanted the game more. They went into every challenge as if it was their last. We are unhappy with the result and have to be self critical. In the return game we must do a lot more than we did today"

Jannik Vestergaard: "The way we conceded was disappointing. Their goals came out of nothing. They did the simple things, like winning 50-50s and getting to the second ball, better than us. We were under pressure because of the way they played."

Rouven Schröder: "We are furious and disappointed. We started the game badly and both goals were our own fault. We deserved to go into the break drawing, admittedly, and we spoke in the dressing room and came out a better side after the break. But we paid the price for our clumsiness at the end.

Thomas Eichin: "After our goal we came into the game much more, but overall, we gave the opposition too many chances. We have to learn to be happy with one point sometimes. In the Bundesliga, every mistake will be punished and you have to give 120% the whole time. It's got nothing to do with lacking creativity, rather winning 50-50s and having passion."

Clemens Fritz: "Darmstadt were better than us in the first half, we were lucky to go into the lead, and then we gave away a penalty. You can't get away with that and we have to communicate better and play better as a team. We tried to take the game to them in the second half, but it ended up going the other way.

On the red card:

Theodor Gebre Selassie: "The red card followed some very dangerous play from Junior Diaz. The situation is difficult to judge but the referee makes the final decision and we have to accept that."

Thomas Eichin: "We can't allow that to happen twice in a row. That is something we will have to speak about."

Jannik Vestergaard: "It's a shame that two important players have got themselves suspended, but we will overcome this situation. We are a team, not a collection of individual players."

On the penalty:

Clemens Fritz: "When you conceded penalties like that twice in two games, you need to take a look at yourselves. We messed up as a team today."

Jannik Vestergaard: "It was a misunderstanding between me and Felix. It's very annoying that we let Darmstadt back in the game like that."

On the upcoming fixtures

Zlatko Junuzovic: "We'll pick ourselves up and try to turn our frustration into something positive. We're at home against Leverkusen, we will need to pull together for that game."

Thomas Eichin: "We need to get points on the board immediately to avoid returning to the end of the table that we don't want to be in."

Viktor Skripnik: "There are still enough games. Struggle is a big part of football, that shouldn't be forgotten. We need to stay active until the end. Today wasn't a step backwards, but there are a few things stopping us moving forward."

Rouven Schröder: "It's important that we pick ourselves up quickly, analyse both games honestly and then put points on the board against Leverkusen."
