What a comeback for Claudio Pizarro! 1,226 days since his last game for SV Werder, the Peruvian made his return in the 82nd minute as a substitute for Ulisses Garcia, with the game looking destined to finish 1-1. Ten minutes later, the game was over and Pizarro had made a defining contribution in his 160th Bundesliga match for the Green Whites; Werder had won 3-1.
"It was a very good comeback for me. I felt like I could help the team and we could still win the game." And didn't he do just that! In the 84th minute, Piza was just a second too late to latch onto Fin Bartels' squared pass, but he more than made up for it in injury time. "It was an absolute dream. I wanted to shoot myself, but I saw Tony and I knew I had to pass. He finished it off brilliantly," told Pizarro, who was delighted with his first Bundesliga appearance of the season.
"I'm always happy when I can play. Obviously I would have preferred to play longer, I trained longer than the other players yesterday [Saturday]. But ten minutes was about right for my current fitness level." So the 36-year-old was thrilled when Skripnik finally gave him the nod to come on. "I am an emotional guy, both on the pitch and the bench. I want to be able to help the team with my experience. That happened today. I hope we can call on that in future games as well, then we will be able to look forward to some good times together this season."

The fans also contributed their bit to the win, as they did for Pizarro before the game, when they serenaded their hero's return. "Of course you notice that and this kind of support makes me very happy. The Werder fans are always very good; I am looking forward to the home game next weekend." Hopefully he can enjoy a similarly enjoyable and successful comeback at the Weser-Stadion.
