It's a short week, but the aim is clear. Viktor Skripnik's team are determined to return to Bremen after their game against Hertha BSC on Friday night with all three points. "We know that we can play better than we did against Schalke. We will drive to Berlin with this mentality," said Skripnik at the press conference. Thomas Eichin, too, is aware that the game against Schalke had many positives as well as negatives. "It was a good example of how in the Bundesliga, the little things make all the difference."

They have learned from their mistakes, and according to Eichin, spirits are high. "Everyone is fired up for the first points of the season at Hertha." For that reason, all the players have been giving their all in the training sessions leading up to the match. "We are training hard and intensively, in order to be fully prepared for Berlin," said Skripnik, looking ahead to the second game of the Bundesliga season. Another positive outcome of the recent training sessions, according to the Ukrainian, is the impact of new striker Aron Jóhannsson.

Form on the day crucial

Head coach Viktor Skripnik is very satisfied with new arrival Aron Jóhannsson’s recent performances in training

During the sessions, the USA International has improved "day by day". Skripnik is, however, unsure as to whether the 24-year-old will get a place in his starting XI to face the "Old Lady." "We are slowly getting Aron more and more involved with the team. Against Schalke, he was immediately involved in the match as soon as I brought him on. I liked that a lot," said Werder's manager, who much like Thomas Eichin, expects a completely different game against Hertha.

"In the Bundesliga, there are five or six teams who fight for the top places in the table. Schalke 04 is one of those teams. Along with Hertha BSC, we find ourselves in the mid-table region, where form on the day is crucial," said Eichin. Werder's chairman is predicting an evenly matched game in the capital, which was backed up by Viktor Skripnik.

"Hertha are not a bad team, and will be looking up the table, just like us. Furthermore, they started the season with an away win, and so have good belief. We lacked sharpness against Schalke, and we want to make sure we do better in Berlin," said the 45-year-old. The Green Whites are determined to give the 8,000 Werder fans in the Berlin Olympia stadium their first Bundesliga win of the new season. The aim is clear.
