Striker Aron Johannsson has made the move to SV Werder from Dutch first-division side AZ Alkmaar. The 24-year-old American, who has Icelandic roots, has signed a four-year contract with the Green-Whites until summer 2019, as announced by Werder chief executive Thomas Eichin. The striker was unveiled on Wednesday afternoon after passing his medical with the Bundesliga side.

"Aron was our top choice for the vacant striker's position. Therefore we're really happy that he's chosen to sign for us. He'll fit in incredibly well with the team, both on and off the field," said Eichin. Sporting director Rouven Schröder also added his opinion. "Despite his size, Aron is a very mobile striker who scored goals at an excellent rate for Alkmaar. At 24 years of age he's already got some valuable international experience, having represented the USA at national level as well as playing in the Europa League. He's also got a lot of potential to improve further and to continue his positive career trajectory with us here at Werder," said Schröder.

Johannsson was also delighted at signing a contract with Werder. "It's the right step for me to continue my development. Werder Bremen is a big club, and I'll give everything I have to develop further as a player and to contribute to the team's success."

Aron Johannsson was born in Mobile, Alabama. He began his career with Icelandic side Fjölnir Reykjavík, before moving to Danish first-division side Aarhus GK and then finally to the Netherlands and AZ Alkmaar. The striker scored 29 goals and recorded nine assists in 58 Eredivisie appearances, also playing in the Europa League 14 times. Whilst Johannsson initially appeared for the Iceland U21 side, he has to date won twelve caps for the USA national team, scoring three goals.
