German champions half a century ago: SV Werder Bremen will celebrate the 50th anniversary of their first German title success back in 1965 at the home game against Eintracht Frankfurt. Over the next two weeks, the legendary team of Höttges, Lorenz and Bernard and Piontek will revive the Green-Whites' first Bundesliga title. There will also be a special exhibition at the WUSEUM to mark the 50th anniversary.
In only the second year of the Bundesliga, SV Werder won the first title in the club's history, which was also the same year in which the city of Bremen marked its 1000 year anniversary. Manager Willi Multhaupt and his side moved top of the league on matchday 17 and didn't surrender that position for the rest of the season. World Cup runners-up from 1966 Horst-Dieter Höttges, Max Lorenz and goalkeeper Günter Bernhard, as well as top goal scorer Gerhard Zebrowski (eleven goals) and eight other members of the team will all relive title success on Saturday, 2nd April.

Twelve of the heroes from 1965 have been invited to watch Saturday's game at the stadium, and some will have to make long trips in order to do so. Josef "Sepp" Piontek, for example, will travel from Denmark to the Weser to watch the game. Before kick-off they will be presented to the crowd whilst WERDER.TV shows some moving moments from the 1964/65 season. To conclude the celebrations, the guests will attend a meal at the Dorint Parkhotel along with honorary members of SV Werder. Members from the management board, the board of directors, the executive committee and the honorary president of SV Werder will all reminisce with the title winning side.
At the WUSEUM (the museum at the Weser-Stadion) on Saturday, 2nd April there will be a number of exhibits and displays to observe, including the iconic hat worn by manager Multhaupt. Visitors will also be able to watch a film showing interviews with the players and memorable moments from the season, as well as the legendary trip to America. The special exhibition will be open until July.
To mark the anniversary, there are two nostalgic momentos available in the WERDER Fan-Welt and on the online shop: First is the cult shirt from the 60s, which has been designed in the original style of the championship winning shirt. The retro cotton shirt contains a large Werder diamond, has a V-neck and has green on the sleeves. Also available is the retro black and white ball, which is a must for all lovers of the game.
