Werder striker Davie Selke will move to RB Leipzig at the end of the season, confirmed Werder’s sporting director Thomas Eichin on Wednesday morning. The 20-year old Selke will sign a five year contract at the Saxony side until 2020 for an undisclosed fee.

“We’ve been in discussion since the beginning of the year and we’ve made progress over the past few days”, said Thomas Eichin, who only signed Selke on a long term deal in the summer. “We always said that we would enter such negotiations if all parties can profit from it. That’s the case here. Davie has chosen to go there for sporting reasons that will lead to him, either in the short or long term, returning to the Bundesliga, and for us the financial implications are very attractive. It will give us an opportunity to build our squad. We are certain that other talented players at Werder will use this chance to show us what they can

For now, all concentration will remain on the current season. “Davie is an important part of our team and will continue to give everything for us until the end of the season, in order for us to achieve our goals. I am convinced that Davie will have the support of our fans until the end of the season and will be given a fond farewell by our followers.”

Davie Selke reiterated Eichin’s statement: “This new chapter for me starts in the summer. Until then I want to end the season as best as possible. I thank Werder for all support and teamwork over the last year. I developed greatly here and took many steps forward and I want to prove that until the end of the season. From the summer I hope to be part of a very ambitious club that I can help succeed. I thank Werder for letting me take this next step in my career.”

Davie Selke joined the Werder academy from TSG Hoffenheim in winter 2013 and worked his way up to the first team via the U19s and U23s. Davie has scored six goals in 26 games in the Bundesliga.
