"Janek was there when it mattered. He has handled the challenge very well and has increased the competition for places. He is definitely an option in the squad for the Bundesliga and we're delighted that we've got him on a long-term contract," added Director of Football and Scouting Rouven Schröder.

Sternberg himself was happy to sign. "Until a few months ago, I really hadn't expected this so it's a special feeling. I'm delighted to be a part of this team for the long term and look forward to the challenges ahead."

In summer 2013, Janek Sternberg moved from the Hamburger SV U23 team. Following 43 appearances for Werder's U23 team in the Regionalliga Nord, the 22-year-old made his Bundesliga debut this season on matchday 13 in the 4-0 home victory against SC Paderborn. He has made five appearances since then.
