The sun shone through the clouds as the Werder players arrived at training on Thursday morning. Following the 2-1 away victory, which came on the club's 116th anniversary, it was impossible to miss the happiness of the Green-Whites even in the fitness room where Bargfrede was recuperating.

The day after the match, the delight was still written all over goalscorer Philipp Bargfrede's face: "We delivered a good performance and deservedly won," reflected the midfielder after the game. The 25-year-old's winning goal in the 52nd minute, to make it 2-1 against Hoffenheim, was his fourth career goal in the Bundesliga. Having scored three goals in previous meetings against 1899 Hoffenheim, Werder have always taken the points when Bargfrede has been on the score sheet so he joked that his place in the starting eleven was unquestionable. He is now however hoping not to have to wait until the two team's next encounter to score his fifth league goal: "I'd welcome it in our next fixture."

Bargfrede: “The formation suits me“

The more attacking and daring style of play, which Werder coach Viktor Skripnik has introduced, benefits him. "The formation suits me but I still have to strike the right balance between my attacking and defending duties." Bargfrede also praised the strong defensive performance of his teammates: “There is always somebody there who can cover and react; everyone is alert. In the second half, Hoffenheim put pressure on us but we haven’t allowed them to have a clear goalscoring opportunity.” But there is no time for the team to rest as Werder’s number 44 and his teammates face Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday in another testing game.

Before then, the team are focused on recovery in the gym, with Franco Di Santo, Fin Bartels and Raphael Wolf also joining him today. The trio completed an individual session in the weights room. The aim ahead of Sunday is to return to full fitness.
