Skripnik’s men can celebrate a successful start to the second half of the season. Di Santo, Bartels & Co. deservedly beat Hertha Berlin 2-0 in front of over 40,000 fans at the Weser-Stadion. “It was a dominant and commanding performance from my team. We deserved to win,” summed up manager Viktor Skripnik after the final whistle.

WERDER.DE went to the mixed zone to collect some more post-match reaction to our first win of 2015.

Thoughts on the result:

Viktor Skripnik: “We’re obviously delighted with the win – our every intention was to come away with three points. We put in a great performance, kept a clean sheet and had more possession than the opponents for the first time. We’re very happy, but we know that we have to keep on working hard.”

Thomas Eichin: “I’m very happy. I did have some concerns that we would be countered with pace, but we got back very quickly whenever we lost the ball. Everyone worked hard to make that happen. Hopefully we can carry on like this on Wednesday.”

Franco Di Santo: “It was very important for us to start with a win today. It’s not just an important result in terms of the table, but also for our confidence. It’s an important step in the right direction.”

Philipp Bargfrede: “We took control from the off, spread the ball around nicely and implemented the manager’s ideas well.”

Jannik Vestergaard: “We worked really well as a team. I know it sounds like a cliché, but everyone worked hard for each other. It was a nice feeling. I communicated with Gálvez through football (laughs). But all jokes aside, Alex has the key terminology down and can give and understand instructions in German.”

Davie Selke: “We went for it from the first minute and we wanted to use the great atmosphere in the stadium in our game. We did that well and deservedly kept the three points here.”

Thoughts on the new signings:

Viktor Skripnik: “We’re delighted that they opted to join us. We didn’t sign them for them to just train and go sightseeing in the city; they’re here to improve the squad. I have to give my compliments to the scouts, sporting directors and club officials for these transfers.”

Thomas Eichin: We’re very happy to have Jannik Vestergaard here. He showed today that he really strengthens our squad. Levin Öztunali was also good tactically and put in a lot of running – he played well.”

Zlatko Junuzovic: “It was a sensational debut from Jannik. He won all of his tackles. The new signings have integrated perfectly.”

Thoughts on Di Santo:

Zlatko Junuzovic: “It’s extremely important to have a striker like him in the team.”

Thomas Eichin: “Franco is an important factor with his attacking qualities. He showed that again today.”

“Follow it up on Wednesday”

“We have to keep working hard,” says Fin Bartels (photo: nph)

Thoughts on the upcoming match:

Viktor Skripnik: “It’s obviously nice to be sitting 12th at the moment, but we have to follow up that performance on Wednesday and keep on working meticulously. We can’t just talk about improvements being made, but we have to continue to get results as well. There are other games to come, but we’re happy with our position for now. Now I’m excited to see what happens next, particularly away from home, because it will be difficult if we don’t pick up points on the road.”

Franco Di Santo: “It won’t be an easy game, but we will go about the match in Hoffenheim just as we did today and so all we can to take something back to Bremen with us. We will go there with a bit more confidence after today’s win.”

Fin Bartels: “We have to carry on like this, then things will start looking good. It’s a good feeling and we’ll enjoy being further clear of the bottom spots. But in terms of points, it’s all still very tight and we have a lot of tough games ahead of us.”
