Werder skipper Clemens Fritz has returned to Bremen following successful ankle surgery. The procedure was performed in Tübingen on Wednesday after it was revealed that the 36-year-old will be out for the rest of the season. “The operation went well and there were no issues,” the midfielder told WERDER.DE. He expects to begin his rehabilitation in Bremen in a few weeks time.

"We rewarded ourselves with the equaliser"

The images in the wake of Felix Wiedwald’s last minute penalty save in the BayArena were ones symbolic of character. The whole team ran to its keeper and celebrated the deserved point away from home. “That was pure elation, they were all grateful to me and were so pleased,” said Wiedwald on the final few moments of the game.

Wiedwald secures point

Werder Bremen stretched their unbeaten run to four games after a 1-1 draw away at Bayer Leverkusen. Werder’s goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald was the hero of the day, saving an Ömer Toprak penalty which turned out to be the last kick of the game. Kevin Volland had given the hosts the lead after seven minutes but Werder were the better team for long periods, without creating a clear cut chance. It was...

Kruse: “We have a long way to go”

The joy of winning still hasn’t worn off after a few days. Max Kruse’s brace, his first in Werder colours, propelled them to victory on Saturday. “It was a great moment. The euphoria hasn’t worn off yet,” said Kruse in a conversation with WERDER.DE. His goals meant that SVW picked up their third win on the trot, a small but crucial streak – and Kruse sees this no differently.

Nullify Bayer's impetus and extend run

“We need to have impetus against Werder,” that will be Bayer Leverkusen’s aim according to their new coach Tayfun Korkut. Korkut’s opposite number, Alexander Nouri, is well aware of the potential threat that may come as a result of the change in coach. “The players will definitely have a fresh impetus because of the change of coach,” warned Nouri ahead of the clash with the Rhinelanders and added,...

Delaney and Bargfrede join in full training

Just six days separate last week’s game with Darmstadt 98 and this Friday’s game with Bayer Leverkusen. As a result the race against time to be fit for those with small knocks is also limited. Therefore, news of certain players returning to training ahead of Friday’s game with Leverkusen is definitely pleasing to hear.

Gnabry: “I enjoy meeting people”

Much has been written about Serge Gnabry in recent months. Things have gotten better and better for the 21-year-old as of last summer: a regular Bundesliga starter, SV Werder’s top scorer, Germany international, and all-round star. For Gnabry, his breakthrough came in Germany. It could be said that he has suddenly become famous, yet he has had experiences from his time at Arsenal and in the London...

Monday team talk

+++ His appearance alone is enough to terrify opponents. Thomas Delaney, who has been known for his imposing presence and no-nonsense tackles since his arrival in the Bundesliga, now has an additional characteristic with which to inspire fear into his opponents: a mask! The Dane looked like evoked comparisons to Zorro and Batman whilst he trained for the first time with his new mask on Sunday....

Fritz ruled out of Leverkusen match

Clemens Fritz will not be available for selection for SV Werder Bremen in the upcoming week. The captain looks to have suffered a ligament injury. “We have to wait and see what happens over the next few days. Two halves, two stories

SV Werder have had to wait over two years for such a streak. With their 2-0 win over Darmstadt 98, they gained three more all-important points. But it didn’t look like it would go that way at first. “We were lacking passion to begin with,” remarked Max Kruse after the game, who scored twice. After a difficult first-half in which the Green-whites struggled to keep it level, Kruse’s goals were the...

Kruse’s brace saves SVW

After three unsuccessful tries at beating Darmstadt both home and away since they were promoted, Werder Bremen achieved exactly that today. In the matchday 23 game, the Green-whites managed to beat the ‘Lilies’ 2-0 in front of a packed home crowd at the Weser Stadium. Following an all-around disappointing first-half, SVW came out much improved after the break, in which they made the breakthrough....

No room for complacency

“There’s no question about it, we want to win at home. There’s no getting around that.” That is how Werder’s head coach Alexander Nouri is approaching Saturday’s (15:30 CET) match against bottom of the table club SV Darmstadt 98. A win would be the Green-Whites third in a row, something SVW have not managed for over two years. However despite Werder’s recent good run of form and that Kruse, Gnabry...

SV Werder will to continue to do without Philipp Bargfrede. Returning to see friends

For Luca Caldirola it will be a reunion this weekend with many old friends. The centre-back was at Darmstadt 98 for a year and he still gets messages daily from supporters of the Lilies. When Darmstadt come to the Weser-Stadion on Saturday, he will be up against former teammates, fans and many old friends. “A few Italians are coming to the game to watch. It will be a very special match for me,”...
