Efes-Cup : Third Place Thanks To Jensen Penalty

Werder Bremen took third place in the Efes-Cup tournament in Antalya, Turkey. The Green-Whites beat Borussia Dortmund 1:0 (0:0) in the so-called " Little Final". Daniel Jensen decided the tie in the 63rd minute from the penalty spot. The tie was poor but Werder deserved the win on the strenght of an improved second half performance.

Bundesliga Clash For Third Place In Efes Cup

In Antalya on Sunday, 08.01.2006, Werder Bremen meet Borussia Dortmund to play out for Third place in the Efes-Pilsner-Cup. Dortmund went down 3:5 in their semi-final against Galatasary Istanbul.

An "Old Friend" ruined Werder Bremens start in the Efes-Cup in Antalya. Three Ailton goals were enough to beat Bremen 3:2 (0:0) and put Besiktas through to the final.

Unstoppable. Even trailing at the Berlin Olympia Stadium wasn't enough to knock Werder out of their stride. Despite the absence of Miroslav Klose, the Green-Whites turned the tie with goals from Tim Borowski and Nelson Valdez. The end of the Bundesliga season was to be the beginning of a long international period. Most were battling for a World Cup 2006 place with the German players playing in Munich against Bayern as an official opening of the Allianz-Arena. Tim Borowski's goal saved the German national sides blushes before they went on to perform impressively in the Confed Cup and win the hearts of the fans.

The final games of the 2004/2005 season are ahead but nothing seems to want to go right for Werder. In Dortmund Werder attack one goal for 90 minutes and lose 1:0. Even Dortmund coach Bert van Marwijk admitted "Bremen were too good for us", the result was almost embarrassing.

At the beginning of March, Werder appeared to have all of Germany under it's control. Firstly the Gree-Whites had to face the Bayern Munich reserves in the DFB-Cup in Bremen on an icy snow covered pitch and won 3:0 in almost unplayable conditions to move on to the cup semi-finals. The refereeing scandal was also to have an effect on Werder as they learned their reserve teams 1:0 defeat from the previous season was the result of matc fixing. The club decide against demanding the game be played again and attempt to reduce the attention being drawn to the incidents.
