Under a relatively clear sky and in idyllic surroundings, trainer Thomas Schaaf beckoned his 25 man squad out for their first training session in Schruns, Austria. The complete team cycled the 500 meters from the hotel to the sport facility ‘Wagenweg’, where they then went through a 90 minute programme.

‘Mertes’ operation successful - Werder arrive in Schruns

There was certainly no denying that the people of Schruns had made an effort. As the Werder team bus rolled up to the ‘Löwen-Hotel’, speakers in the courtyard blasted out a German summer hit, there were alcohol free Piña Coladas for everyone and even the sun put in an appearance - something that proved an absolute rarity on Norderney.

Werder Bremen’s German international Per Mertesacker incurred a meniscus injury during training on Tuesday morning, without extraneous influence. Mertesacker will undergo surgery in Augsburg on Wednesday, 23.07.2008.

Olympic debate: Werder contact CAS sport tribunal

The Werder Bremen board of directors and Diego met on Tuesday morning to discuss their viewpoints in relation to the Brazilian internationals wish to participate at the Olympic Games. After 90 minutes of talks the two parties failed to come to a mutual agreement.

Fitness test in the rain: The EURO finalists are back

Werder’s EURO 2008 finalists are back. On Monday morning, Torsten Frings, Clemens Fritz and Per Mertesacker began training at the Weser Stadium. The trio began with a fitness test, just as their colleagues had 18 days previously, and started out with some laps of the track in familiar Bremen drizzle.

Trainer Thomas Schaaf drew a generally positive conclusion: “Along with the days in Bremen before we came here, we have been through a good programme. The team were concentrated and are harmonising. Diary – Day 4: Wide eyes and flapping tongues

Norderney – the island with no seasons! Is it spring, autumn, maybe even the beginning of winter? There is certainly no sun!! Instead a heavy cloud of rain is constantly present, hanging over the island – a situation which surely kept many possible spectators away from Thursday’s friendly against Fortuna Köln.

Two injured strikers, but no need to worry

On Wednesday, striker Hugo Almeida returned to the training camp on Norderney and will go through a rehabilitation programme there over the coming days. The 24 year old Portuguese international briefly left the island on Tuesday to return to Bremen, where a detailed medical examination revealed a muscular injury.
