“A challenging year”

2020 has been a year that no one could have expected beforehand. On 4th February 2020, Florian Kohfeldt and the Werder Bremen players were celebrating wildly with fans in a sold-out wohninvest WESERSTADION after the 3-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the DFB-Pokal. Less than two months later, everyday life had come to a standstill, with the Bundesliga no exception to this. “It’s been a...

Werder cruise through to final 16 of DFB-Pokal

SV Werder Bremen finished the year with a commanding 3-0 victory away at second-tier Hannover 96 to advance to the next round of the DFB-Pokal. Two quick-fire goals from Theodor Gebre Selassie and Josh Sargent (29’, 32’) had Florian Kohfeldt’s side two goal up at half time. No more than a long weekend

Werder are in action for the last time on Wednesday night, and then it’s time for the Winter break. But it’s quite different to a long period of rest and recuperation – it’s really just a long weekend. There are ten days between the last game of 2020 and the first of 2021. “It’s shorter than a normal international break,” says head coach Florian Kohfeldt. WERDER.DE provides an overview of the...

The appeal of an exciting competition

The DFB-Pokal is a “really exciting competition” for Florian Kohfeldt, with each game being described as “make or break.” At the pre-match press conference on Tuesday, Werder’s head coach revealed ‘I like it when games mean a lot.” As a result, knockout games, like in the DFB-Pokal, are particularly appealing to him. “One side will be left in the competition after this game and we want to be that...

Mina joins up with Ecuador U20s

Johan Mina has had a quiet few weeks recently. The Ecuadorian was eased into training at the club following his transfer to SV Werder. However, the restrictions brought about by the Coronavirus pandemic did not make settling into Bremen life any easier for the 18-year-old. Mina is currently in his home country, where he will be preparing for the U20 South American Championship starting in January,...

“The goal was a big relief”

Deep in the Mainz penalty area in the 90th minute, it was who Eren Dinkci who rose highest to head in Tahith Chong’s cross to win the game for Werder Bremen. It was the perfect end to a rollercoaster of a year in the Bundesliga, as Theodor Gebre Selassie emphasised following the game: “The fact that we had to wait until the last minute for the winner is a typical representation of our year. It’s...

Dinkci scores debut goal to give Werder victory!

What a result! SV Werder Bremen took all three points and won the last Bundesliga game of 2020 against 1. FSV Mainz 1-0 on Saturday afternoon. After an evenly contested first half in which Werder did not manage to break through a stubborn Mainz side, the hosts started the second half on the front foot. “A big chance for us“

Florian Kohfeldt doesn’t want to place too much important on his quote after the home defeat to Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday night: “I said that we are under pressure, but you are always under pressure in the Bundesliga. That’s just part and parcel of it.” Despite that, the upcoming away game at 1. FSV Mainz 05 is still a key game for SVW. “This match could influence the way our season goes,”...

Pick ourselves up and move on

Frustrating and unnecessary: those were the two words that best summed up Tuesday’s home defeat to Borussia Dortmund. SV Werder kept the match against the Champions League side open for a long time, but in the end came away with nothing to show for their efforts. “Unfortunately we’ve finished empty handed today, despite deserving something from the game,” summed up scorer Kevin Möhwald. For head...

A spontaneous change of plan

Florian Kohfeldt was in the middle of the opponent analysis ahead of the game against Borussia Dortmund when the news broke that BVB had parted company with coach Lucien Favre and assistant coach Edin Terzić had taken over. “I’m sorry for Lucien, because he did a really good job,” stated Kohfeldt at Monday’s pre-match press conference. The preparation for Tuesday’s game has therefore become more...

Turning point in the 25th minute

Werder’s bright start to the game away in Leipzig was promising and raised hopes that Kohfeldt’s team would be able to come away with something. SVW started high up the pitch and put the hosts under pressure with some good pressing work. After conceding the penalty in the 25th minute, however, the Green-Whites lost their grip on Nagelsmann’s side and on the game. “After the penalty, we gave them a...
